ANNOUNCEMENT: Media coverage of the June-12 Legislative Elections

The National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) informs foreign media wishing to cover the Legislative elections which will be held on the 12th of June 2021 that the deadline to apply for a provisional press accreditation is set from Sunday 25 April 2021 to Friday 28 May 2021 (included).
The application for a provisional press accreditation is to be submitted to the Algerian diplomatic or consular missions in the country where the Headquarter of the media employing the journalist(s) is located.

Announcement for Algerian students

The Embassy of Algeria in London informs the Algerian students at the United Kingdom’s universities that the students ‘office has been transferred from the Consulate General to the Embassy from 22 February 2021.

Review of the electoral rolls – 16th March to 23rd March 2021 –

In accordance with the Presidential Decree No. 96-01 convening the electorate for the legislative elections on June 12th, 2021, the Consulate General in London has proceeded with the extraordinary review of electoral rolls from March 16th to March 23rd, 2021.

Exemption of residents abroad from traveling to Algeria to set up microentreprises

The Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister in charge of microenterprises announced that Algerian nationals residing abroad wishing to set up micro-enterprises within the framework of the National Agency for Support and Development of Entrepreneurship (ANADE) are exempt from travelling to the country to carry out the required paperwork and administrative procedures beforehand related to the setting-up of microenterprises at provincial agencies level point.

Algerian Group Saidal to produce as of September 2.5 million doses of anti-Covid vaccines per month

The Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Abderrahmane Lotfi Djamel Benbahmed, announced on Tuesday 13th July that the Algerian pharmaceutical group Saidal will produce, starting from next September, 2.5 million doses of Sputnik V and Sinovacanti Covid vaccines per month.

Abderrahmane Hammad takes office as head of COA

The President of the Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee (COA), Abderrahmane Hammad, was installed as head of the Olympic body, during a ceremony held on Sunday 20 June, with the presence of the Minister of Youth and Sports and the Secretary of State for Elite Sport. Swimmer Charouati Souad qualifies to Tokyo Olympics 2021

Algerian swimmer Charouati Souad has been qualified to the Tokyo Olympics 2021, achieving the first African and Algerian qualification in open water swimming for a distance of 10 km and the second swimmer in the history of Algerian participation to officially qualify to the Olympic Games in 16 years.

During an assessment meeting of the Covid-19 pandemic situation in Algeria, the President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered on Tuesday 27th April the “immediate” implementation of the Sputnik V vaccine production project.
According to the Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Lotfi Benbahmed, the anti-Covid vaccine Sputnik V will be produced by the public group Saidal in partnership with the Russian laboratory, from next September.

Sport: Algerian duet Mammeri-Medel wins gold medal on Badminton Lima Tournament

Algerian duet Koceila Mammeri and Youcef Sabri Medel won the gold medal of the International Lima Tournament which wrapped up Sunday 25th April after five days of competition.


Algeria ranked best country in Africa for Quality of Life, 2021 (CEOWORLD Magazine)


Algeria has been named as the number One country in Africa in 2021 for Quality of Life, according to the CEOWORLD magazine 2021 report.

First liters of rapeseed oil produced in Algeria

The Ministry of Agriculture Rural Development announced ‘’encouraging results” of the rapeseed cultivation program, which has been launched in a bid to find substitutions for cooking oil imports.

Sonelgaz able to enter African markets

The CEO of Sonelgaz, Mr. Chaher Boulakhras declared, on Monday 21 June, that Sonelgaz Group, Algerian company in charge of distributing gas and electricity in the country, is able to penetrate the African markets, stating that the Group achieves a surplus of production of electricity outside periods of peak consumption.

Sonatrach and Equinor sign memorandum of understanding on exploration and production in Algeria

Sonatrach signed on 17th May a Memorandum of Understanding with the Norwegian oil and gas company Equinor to strengthen the existing partnership in oil exploration and production in Algeria and beyond.
The new deal also includes a partnership on new technologies and environmental protection in current and new projects, particularly emissions reduction and carbon capture, improvement of recovery figures and development of a flexible operating model.

Statement By Sonatrach

Sonatrach denied the allegations of expropriation made by Petroceltic International PLC and indicated that it decided, on 12th April 2021, to terminate the contract concluded, on 26th September 2004, with this company for the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons in Isarène perimeter (blocks 228 and 229a) under the Law n°86-14 of 19th August 1986, as further amended and supplemented, relating to the activities of prospecting, research, exploitation and transportation by pipeline of hydrocarbons.

Sonelgaz engaged in a modernization process

The Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab said on Tuesday 27th April that Sonelgaz is engaged in a process of modernisation by adopting a new strategy (the 2035 Strategy) to evolve into a new style of governance and management.
Mr. Arkab added that the purpose of these transformations and modernisation in sonelgaz is to create wealth and added value through cost control and meeting the deadlines for projects and investments.

Hydrocarbons: Sonatrach achieves US$6.8 bn turnover in Q1/2021

Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab announced on Sunday 25th April that Sonatrach has achieved a turnover worth US$ 6.8 billion over the first quarter of 2021.
Mr. Arkab described as “positive” this figure which encourages the achievement of the objectives set until the end of the year in view of the modest recovery recorded during the same period of last year.

Energy transition: government’s strategy explained

The Minister of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies, Chems Eddine Chitour, explained on Monday 12th April the government’s strategy to achieve energy transition and the national programme for the development of renewable energies and energy efficiency by 2030. He highlighted Algeria’s ambitions to fight climate change and ensure that its commitments in this regard be met, including carbon stability and neutrality.
The Minister announced that the first solar kilowatt-hour (KWh) of the 1,000 MWh program, initiated as part of the renewable energy development program, should be produced by the end of the year or at the beginning next year.

Prime Minister calls on operators to invest in agricultural sector

The Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad called on Monday 12th April, the operators and professionals to invest in agriculture in a bid to make this sector the central pillar of the economic revival.
The Prime Minister recalled the Government’s efforts to support Agriculture, in order to ensure the country’s food security and reduce the import bill for food products, which often exceeds USD 10 billion annually.

Forum on investment in agri-food industry to take place Monday in Algiers

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is organising on 12th April a Forum on investment in agriculture and the agri-food industry under the theme: “Investment as an agricultural and agri-food growth leverage”.
The Forum is an opportunity to highlight investment opportunities and to allow project holders and potential investors to present their projects in agricultural production and the processing of products, in accordance with the approach developed by the sector to boost structuring investments and develop strategic products including cereals, sugar, oil and fodder.

Sonelgaz seeks to position itself as investor in renewable energy

On the occasion of the launching of the new public company Sharikat Kahraba El Djazaïr (SKE), which is the result of a partnership between Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, the Chairman and CEO of the latter, Chaher Boulakhras, said on Sunday, 11th April, that Sonelgaz Group seeks to position itself as an investor in renewable energy projects.
He underlined that this partnership aims to pool resources and give the new company the means to invest in green energy regions, adding that this partnership is part of the Sonelgaz’s strategy for 2035.

First Inter-African Import Export Fair to be held in Algiers from 25 to 27 May

The 1st Inter-African Import Export Fair “IMPEX2021” will be organised from 25 to 27 May at the International Centre of Conference (CIC), in Algiers, with the participation of 15 African countries and 130 Algerian economic operators.
IMPEX2021 is part of the efforts aiming at developing and strengthening inter-African exchanges. It will also highlight the potential of African products intended for export which are exempt from duties and taxes under inter-African customs agreements.

Second Algerian virtual Waste exhibition-AVWE to be held in Algiers from 5 to 7 June

The National Waste Agency (AND) is organising the 2nd edition of the virtual exhibition on waste “Algerian virtual exhibition of waste-AVWE” from 5 to 7 June. Cultural Economy Forum held on Saturday 3rd April under the patronage of the President of the Republic

The Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad inaugurated on Saturday 3rd April, at the International Centre of Conferences Abdelatif Rahal in Algiers, the Cultural Economy Forum.

Public banks to open soon branches in African countries

Minister of Finance Aïmene Benabderrahmane announced on Saturday, 3rd April, the opening in the upcoming weeks of branches of Algerian public banks in many African countries.

Bank of Algeria modifies currency exchange regulations for exporters

The Bank of Algeria’s (BA) Money and Credit Council adopted draft regulations to change the rules applicable to current transactions with other countries and currency accounts. These changes are designed to boost exports, especially those relating to the knowledge economy.
In line with these amendments, exporters can access all earnings in foreign currencies for expenses required by their activities and are exempt from bank domiciliation formalities relating to exports of digital services, services provided by start-ups and non-commercial professionals.

Sonatrach launches two petrochemical projects in Arzew and Skikda

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, announced on 1st April that work has begun on two planned petrochemical units managed by Sonatrach. The first project is a unit designed to produce 200,000 tonnes/year of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in the Arzew industrial zone. The second is a complex with the capacity to produce 100,000 tonnes/year of linear alkylbenzene in the Skikda industrial zone.

Sonatrach signed on 17th May a Memorandum of Understanding with the Norwegian oil and gas company Equinor to strengthen the existing partnership in oil exploration and production in Algeria and beyond.
The new deal also includes a partnership on new technologies and environmental protection in current and new projects, particularly emissions reduction and carbon capture, improvement of recovery figures and development of a flexible operating model.

Statement By Sonatrach

Sonatrach denied the allegations of expropriation made by Petroceltic International PLC and indicated that it decided, on 12th April 2021, to terminate the contract concluded, on 26th September 2004, with this company for the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons in Isarène perimeter (blocks 228 and 229a) under the Law n°86-14 of 19th August 1986, as further amended and supplemented, relating to the activities of prospecting, research, exploitation and transportation by pipeline of hydrocarbons.

Sonelgaz engaged in a modernization process

The Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab said on Tuesday 27th April that Sonelgaz is engaged in a process of modernisation by adopting a new strategy (the 2035 Strategy) to evolve into a new style of governance and management.
Mr. Arkab added that the purpose of these transformations and modernisation in sonelgaz is to create wealth and added value through cost control and meeting the deadlines for projects and investments.

Hydrocarbons: Sonatrach achieves US$6.8 bn turnover in Q1/2021

Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab announced on Sunday 25th April that Sonatrach has achieved a turnover worth US$ 6.8 billion over the first quarter of 2021.
Mr. Arkab described as “positive” this figure which encourages the achievement of the objectives set until the end of the year in view of the modest recovery recorded during the same period of last year.

Energy transition: government’s strategy explained

The Minister of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies, Chems Eddine Chitour, explained on Monday 12th April the government’s strategy to achieve energy transition and the national programme for the development of renewable energies and energy efficiency by 2030. He highlighted Algeria’s ambitions to fight climate change and ensure that its commitments in this regard be met, including carbon stability and neutrality.
The Minister announced that the first solar kilowatt-hour (KWh) of the 1,000 MWh program, initiated as part of the renewable energy development program, should be produced by the end of the year or at the beginning next year.

Prime Minister calls on operators to invest in agricultural sector

The Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad called on Monday 12th April, the operators and professionals to invest in agriculture in a bid to make this sector the central pillar of the economic revival.
The Prime Minister recalled the Government’s efforts to support Agriculture, in order to ensure the country’s food security and reduce the import bill for food products, which often exceeds USD 10 billion annually.

Forum on investment in agri-food industry to take place Monday in Algiers

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is organising on 12th April a Forum on investment in agriculture and the agri-food industry under the theme: “Investment as an agricultural and agri-food growth leverage”.
The Forum is an opportunity to highlight investment opportunities and to allow project holders and potential investors to present their projects in agricultural production and the processing of products, in accordance with the approach developed by the sector to boost structuring investments and develop strategic products including cereals, sugar, oil and fodder.

Sonelgaz seeks to position itself as investor in renewable energy

On the occasion of the launching of the new public company Sharikat Kahraba El Djazaïr (SKE), which is the result of a partnership between Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, the Chairman and CEO of the latter, Chaher Boulakhras, said on Sunday, 11th April, that Sonelgaz Group seeks to position itself as an investor in renewable energy projects.
He underlined that this partnership aims to pool resources and give the new company the means to invest in green energy regions, adding that this partnership is part of the Sonelgaz’s strategy for 2035.

First Inter-African Import Export Fair to be held in Algiers from 25 to 27 May

The 1st Inter-African Import Export Fair “IMPEX2021” will be organised from 25 to 27 May at the International Centre of Conference (CIC), in Algiers, with the participation of 15 African countries and 130 Algerian economic operators.
IMPEX2021 is part of the efforts aiming at developing and strengthening inter-African exchanges. It will also highlight the potential of African products intended for export which are exempt from duties and taxes under inter-African customs agreements.

Bank of Algeria modifies currency exchange regulations for exporters

The Bank of Algeria’s (BA) Money and Credit Council adopted draft regulations to change the rules applicable to current transactions with other countries and currency accounts. These changes are designed to boost exports, especially those relating to the knowledge economy.
In line with these amendments, exporters can access all earnings in foreign currencies for expenses required by their activities and are exempt from bank domiciliation formalities relating to exports of digital services, services provided by start-ups and non-commercial professionals.

Sonatrach launches two petrochemical projects in Arzew and Skikda

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, announced on 1st April that work has begun on two planned petrochemical units managed by Sonatrach. The first project is a unit designed to produce 200,000 tonnes/year of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in the Arzew industrial zone. The second is a complex with the capacity to produce 100,000 tonnes/year of linear alkylbenzene in the Skikda industrial zone.
