President Tebboune’s address at 34th Ordinary Session of Arab Summit BAGHDAD (Iraq)

“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,

Prayer and peace be upon His Messenger,

A few days ago, our Arab League celebrated its 80th anniversary while our Arab world is overwhelmed by growing challenges unprecedented in its contemporary history.

Our central cause faces liquidation plans plotted against it and encounters the obstinacy of the Israeli occupation to impose its absurd vision of a peace tailored to its measure, dictated by its whims and motivated by its desires: a peace, in short, founded on the ruins of the Palestinian cause. A peace depriving neighboring nations of the most elementary foundations of their security, their tranquility and their stability, and ensuring to the occupier an absolute hegemony, without control, nor surveillance or contestation.

The situation in many of our Arab countries is also deteriorating at an alarming rate in terms of security, politics, and economy, in the face of attempts at foreign interference to sow discord, division, and rivalry among the children of the same homeland and a united Nation.

A new international order threatens everyone without exception, as the foundations of the contemporary system of international relations tend to fade away, giving way to the logic of force, of law subordinated to power, and of submission and obedience to power dynamics.

We stand at critical and decisive crossroads where our collective voice will remain ignored unless we reassess what unites us within our organization—the shared rules, principles, and aspirations that support both our present circumstances and future prospects.

In Algeria, we consider that such a situation should bring back to the forefront of our common priorities the imperative to reform our Arab League, which was founded in a different era than ours, in a context different from ours, and an environment different from ours. This underlines the necessity to adapt it to the new challenges and unprecedented issues of our time.

Given this necessity, we are called, today, to strengthen our support for our central cause because our commitment to defending this cause is not out of generosity or kindness but rather a matter of loyalty to a historical responsibility that falls upon the Arab Nation and to a legal, moral, and civilizational responsibility that concerns all of humanity.

We are also called, today, to show great solidarity to our brothers in Lebanon and Syria, because the unity and sovereignty of these two countries are an integral part of the issue of security and stability throughout the Middle East.

We are called to make all necessary efforts, approaches and initiatives to settle the crises in Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia, because it is the absence of the Arab role that has left the field wide open to foreign interference that has unduly compromised the present and future of these afflicted Arab regions.

These are the foundations on which Algeria relies in its mandate, as an Arab country, within the United Nations Security Council.

We faithfully assume this mandate, in its second and final year, and hope to have succeeded in conveying the concerns of our Nation and in defending its aspirations and ambitions with dedication and loyalty.

I thank you for your generous attention.
