H.E Nourredine Yazid, the Ambassador of Algeria meeting the Speaker of the House of Commons, Lindsay Hoyle

The Speaker of the House of Commons of the British Parliament, Lindsay Hoyle, stressed the importance of Algeria for the United Kingdom as a political and economic partner, and its role in peace and stability in North Africa and the Sahel region.

During a meeting on Tuesday with the Algerian Ambassador to London, H.E Mr Nourredine Yazid, at the seat of parliament, which was decked out in the national emblem for the occasion, Mr Hoyle praised ‘the quality of bilateral cooperation in various areas of interest’, saying that his country should ‘take advantage of Algeria’s abundant natural resources by broadening and deepening the partnership in other sectors, notably energy and tourism’.

The Algerian Ambassador to London and the Speaker of the Lower House also expressed their satisfaction at ‘the excellence of Algerian-British relations, which have always been marked by respect and friendship, and which are becoming increasingly dynamic and flourishing’.

The meeting, which took place in the wake of the reconfiguration of the British Parliament following the general election on 4 July 2024, also gave Mr Nourredine Yazid the opportunity to discuss ‘the prospects for cooperation between the two parliaments and the mechanisms needed to develop it further, before exchanging views on a number of topical regional and international issues’.

On this subject, the Algerian Ambassador assured his guest, who was keen to see a strengthening of the multifaceted ties, that the political and economic reforms that Algeria is undergoing under the leadership of the President of the Republic, Mr Abdelmadjid Tebboune, ‘will enable the two countries to build on the common potential that remains insufficiently exploited, despite the progress made in recent years in terms of the volume of trade’.

In the field of inter-parliamentary cooperation, the importance of establishing a dense and fruitful flow of exchanges between the Chambers of the two countries was highlighted.

H.E Mr Nourredine Yazid welcomed the ‘positive’ role played by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, which has developed initiatives with the two chambers of the Algerian parliament.

On another level, the meeting was also an opportunity for H.E Mr Nourredine Yazid to express his wish to speed up the setting up of the British-Algerian Parliamentary Friendship Group, which will be created by the new legislature.

On this subject, Mr Hoyle expressed his willingness to maintain contact with the Algerian diplomatic representation and hoped for an exchange of visits between parliamentarians from the two countries.
